The World of Lady Lazarus eBook Michele Lang
"The World of Lady Lazarus" by Michele Lang is a fascinating guide or complement to Lang's book, "Lady Lazarus." The author studied Sylvia Plath's poem, "Lady Lazarus" in school, but she has her own interpretation of it. Lang's parents are both survivors of the Holocaust and they did not want her to write about it. However, I have read other writers say as Lang says, that she thought about the story, but she didn't follow it as she moved from place to place. The story followed her. The character of Magda Lazarus, a woman who could come back from the dead, wouldn't leave the author alone until she wrote the book. She just wouldn't stay dead. Lady Lazarus was a Lazarus witch, the eldest daughter of an eldest daughter.Lady Lazarus in Michele Lang's guide to her book is explained as being about our own power to change our lives and the world. This is a story of magic, and Lang's wanting to say to her family members that "the question of 'what if' is the basis of all creative thought.' (Loc 45) It won't negate the lives of her relatives who lived through the Third Reich, but instead it will honor them.
There are some short essays about places, such as Budapest, and other Eastern European locations and the historical and metaphyical information about them, just because readers asked for it. The first part sets up for those who haven't read the book and for those who have just read it and want more information. The second part is about the history and mysticism, which is quite interesting about the Jewish faith. She talks a lot about wolves because Hitler called himself a wolf and there was a unit set up by Goebbels called the SS Werewolves who were to fight on even after Germany had lost the war. A large bunker was built in Eastern Europe as a command post called "The Wolf's Lair." Lady Lazarus equates werewolves with Nazis.
I especially liked Lang's explanations of the Jewish Guardian Angels, her thoughts on whether angels have free will or not, and the story of The Great Temple of Budapest. I learned a lot by reading this and it whetted my appetite for more in-depth stories of Lady Lazarus. This book will go on my to-be-read list for sure.
The book is classified as fantasy, but from this little guide to "Lady Lazarus" it sounds like a very fascinating book, all tied in with the Holocaust and Jewish history and mysticism.
Highly recommended.

The World of Lady Lazarus eBook Michele Lang Reviews
Good stuff, engaging, historical WW2 Nazi and Jew battle the forces of good and evil, demons, angels, Singer and the rest......a bewitching fantasy twisted tale.....
A historical essay.
'Lady Lazarus' is an alternative history novel which mixes paranormal elements with history on the eve of World War II. The Protagonist is a young Jewish witch with the power to rise from the dead. In the novel she battles against the forces that lead to World War II and tries to prevent the Holocost.
In this companion piece, the author explains her reasons for taking on such a sensitive subject. She also provides general historical background for the time period. I haven't read Lady Lazarus, but this companion piece was well written and I found the author's reasons for creating the story compelling. I plan to check out the novel.
This short work is a companion to the novel Lady Lazarus. It contains a short essay by the author explaining why she decided to write the novel, historical context, and an exploration of some of the mystical/religious aspects of the novel.
I imagine it will be of limited interest to those who haven't read the novel yet (like me), but will be interesting to those who read the novel and want to know more.
